About the comic, the author & this weblog
This is a funny/romantic story about Death incarnate pursuing a young woman who stubbornly refuses to succumb to him. Inevitably, the two of them start liking each other and even an innocent romance starts to develop – which of course is doomed right from the beginning, since it is and always will be Death’s foremost aim to take the Maiden’s life.
The motif of “Death and the Maiden” originates in late Middle Age paintings and remains popular throughout the centuries until today. The topic has a very strong romantic to erotic component right from the beginning (see Niklaus Manuel Deutsch, Hans Baldung Grien) and is not only adapted in painting but also poetry, music (Franz Schubert) and drama (Ariel Dorfman). I have hidden some references within my story, which will be explained along the way.
My name is Nina Ruzicka, I was born 1972 in Vienna (Austria) and am still residing there. Since 1997, I am working as a freelance cartoonist and comic artist. My first publication was a cartoon series for a women’s magazine that appeared successfully for over 5 years. My second series, Death and the Maiden, was created for internet publication on the website of the Austrian Broadcasting Company and appeared from 2001-2004. Due to reader’s demands, a sequel was created in 2005 which is still in working progress.
Both series are meanwhile published on my own website (in the original German language) and translated into English by myself along with the help of several native speakers and volunteers. However, it is likely that there are flaws in the English translation, so if ever you spot one, please don’t hesitate to inform us via e-mail or commentary.
Death & Maiden is being published in English for a very long time, originally in the english section of my website Cartoon Tomb. When I created this website, I was not aware that Death & Maiden would take such a prominent part of it for such a long time, so I decided it’s time to relaunch the series.
Part 1 will be re-published within one year (2009) for all those readers who are not yet familiar with it. Those however, who already know the first part and are continually reading part 2, there is a second blog where a new strip will be published every Tuesday and Friday.
I transferred some of the informative sub-pages of my old website into this blog, you can find them in the upper link bar. Some other pages were a little too complicated to transfer them easily, so for the time being they remain on my old site Cartoon Tomb. You can find those links under the menue “Misc” in the right side bar.
This information is essential for you, because if you go on one of the “old” pages, you will leave this blog and therefore be confronted with a slightly different design, which is that of my website Cartoon Tomb. Don’t be irritated, you can always get back to this blog by clicking on “part 1″ or “part 2″ in the upper link bar.
Eventually, I will transfer all the Death & Maiden-pages into the blog, but that may take a while.
