Even though Death and the Maiden is mainly a funny/ironical story, I don’t want to ridicule Death as a phenomenon by any means. Despite his portrayal as a somewhat clumsy fellow with big eyes, he’s still Death and that should never be forgotten.
His actions are most feared by people – even those who are not afraid of him – when they affect their beloved and friends. Interestingly enough, one is never as close to Death as in situations of personal loss and grief. Few people curse and swear at Death at the grave of a deceased person, instead they rather wish for him to take them as well! If they could, they would presumably clasp themselves to Death’s bosom just like the girl did in this episode.
In my opinion, this is the very reason why Death is hardly ever seen on a graveyard.
