The depiction of young Ray Bradbury as rather naive and sissy (today he'd be called a nerd) stems from Bradbury's own indirect self-portrayal. In his two novels Death is a lonely business and A graveyard for lunatics he describes the hero of both stories (a young writer at the beginning of his career) as such, and there is no doubt this character bears heavy autobiographic signs. It is nearly impossible to give a short description of Bradbury's writing style. He has the ability to baffle the reader by switching from rather pure unadulterated kitsch to heart-wrenching drama, just to make another unexpected twist and end up in a nightmarish fantasy. He covers everything from screwball comedy to dystopian horror. I can only recommend everyone to pick up some of his short story collections, and in case you are a fan of the Silent movie era, you should definitely go and read the two above mentioned novels as well. |
