When I started editing my comic for second online publishing, I came across the last picture on this page. It not only made me feel uncomfortable regarding the picture itself, it also made me realize how white-centered my whole range of characters was/is.

First of all, this picture as it is. When I drew it, I had no message whatsoever, but simply manifested my own experiences with hospitals in the last decades of the 20th century in Austria. Doctors were exclusively white, nurses often came from different places, be it Eastern European or Asian countries. Today, this picture looks bad had it been drawn recently, because it would have sent the message of white supremacy. That was not the intention back then, nor is it now.

The more important part is that the picture made me realize that there are basically no other ethnicities in my story - only whites, those I am most if not exclusively familiar with. Had I started my comic now, I would have been more aware. However, the story as it is today is over 10 years old, its beginnings even older, with only one chapter missing until it is finished.
I don't believe in hiding the flaws of the past, but even more than that, I don't want to make shallow attempts of inclusion that - at best - would come across as "well meant", since the story is already set, no big changes possible. The best approach, I believe, is to simply point out the retrospective weaknesses myself as I go along.
