The middle panel (Is it... Theodore?) is a quote from Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, by now an old movie.
Admittedly, I contradict my own rules here for the sake of the gag. The girl doesn't look Death in the eyes, therefore she shouldn't die. Let's just say, I was at the beginning of my story and didn't take it all too seriously yet.

The last panel has been changed from the original online version (which you see in the following strip) for the printed book, and this is one of the jokes I would no longer make today, because it leads to misinterpretation.
The idea was to break from the funny-light humor into some sort of realization, that even though we make jokes about Death right now, he really does affect us in the most painful ways. However, one cannot get such a message across in one single panel. Looking at it now, it seems to me as if I'm making fun of babies dying, and the only thing I can say is that I know this was not my intention. If anything, it's a really bad execution of a thoughtful idea which vehemently backfires.
But, that's the way it was printed, and I'm not going to lie about it.
